1.1 – What does this mean? How do you say?
You’ve just started with Czech and you’re going to understandably get into a number of situations where you will want to know how to say something or don’t know what something means. Two phrases will come in handy:
Jak se řekne __________?
‘How do you say bathroom, I’m hungry, castle, bus ticket…’ There are going to be numerous occasions when you want to ask this question.
Jak se řekne „car”?
How do you say “car”?
You can add in the word česky which means ‘in Czech’:
Jak se řekne česky „car“?
How do you say “car”?
Someone will answer:
Řekne se to „auto“.
Řekne se to česky „auto“.
Or simply:
Česky je to „auto“.
In Czech it’s „auto“.
Co znamená __________?
If you run into some Czech words and you don’t know what they mean in English, you can ask what they mean using the phrase Co znamená __________? – What does __________ mean?’
Co znamená „ryba“?
What does “ryba” mean?
Znamená to „fish“.
It means “fish”.
