9.7 – po locative ‘around’

The preposition po is followed by the locative case in the meaning of  ‘around’ (as in aimless walking), e.g. – po parku ‘around the park’, po městě ‘around the city’

A few verbs that you will see this with are cestovat ‘to travel’ or procházet se ‘to stroll around’:

Každé léto cestujeme po Evropě.

Every summer we travel around Europe.

Dneska ráno jsme se procházeli po parku.

This morning we walked around the park.

Když jsem v novém městě, často se koukám po okolí.

When I’m in a new area, I often look around the surroundings/area.

We see these constructions when talking about some holiday traditions:

Na velikonoční pondělí mladí chlapci chodí po domech koledovat a mrskají holky pomlázkou.	Na Halloween se děti převlékají do kostýmů a chodí po okolí a říkají “Trick or Treat”.

Note that we see these with indeterminate verbs, since they are used for goal-less motion (see 9.7 – Indeterminate Verbs (chodit, jezdit) and goal-less motion).
