5.3 – Making Comparisons — Physical Appearance

You may want to make comparisons about yourself or someone else. Maybe they used to have longer (or shorter hair), or they were skinnier. Or that a piece of clothing was prettier than another. We’re going to learn the comparative forms (e.g. new –> newer) of several adjectives used to describe appearance. Here is some useful vocabulary for making comparison:

• dlouhý – delší

Pavel měl delší vlasy, když byl mladší.

Pavel had longer hair when he was younger.

• krátký – kratší

Minulý rok jsem měla kratší vlasy.

I had shorter hair last year.

• silný – silnější
• štíhlý – štíhlejší

Pavel byl silnější, ale teď běhá hodně a je trochu štíhlejší.

Pavel was a bigger, but now he runs a lot and is a little skinnier.

Lucie byla hodně hubená ale teď má silnější postavu.

Lucie was very thin but now she has a heavier figure.
