2.7 – Colloquial Variants of Family Terms

In English we have words like mother and alongside them we have colloquial, more casual forms like mom, mommy, mama, bro, sis, auntie, gramps, mema, etc. Some of these sound folksy, cute, or even a little dated. They are a good analogy for the Czech forms we have encountered/will encounter.

In English, some words like mommy sound like something only a young child would use. Czech will have colloquial/casual forms of this nature, though none of them is particularly restricted to young people. They all just tend to be colloquial forms that people use in everyday speech (just like we tend to use mom instead of mother, dad instead of father, etc.).
