9.8 – Visiting someone

We need to be able to talk about going to people’s houses for a visit. First, let’s review the word návštěva – a visit. Since it is considered an event (see 6.5 – do vs. na), it will be used with na. We will use this word along with two constructions (k DAT for destination, u GEN for location) to describe who we are visiting.

Destination (i.e. where we are going for a visit)

Remember that we go to a place na  ACC:

Zítra jdeme na návštěvu k strýci.

Tomorrow we’re going on a visit to my uncle.

We can talk about who we are visiting using k  DAT:

k / ke^[1]  DAT

If you are going to a person’s house (or in some cases their office, such as a doctor), then you use k  DAT.

Location (i.e. where we are for a visit)

With the word návštěva, if we are a place we will use na  LOC, i.e. na návštěvě. To say where we are, we’ll use u  GEN case (we have seen this with phrases like u nás ‘where we live’, u vás ‘where you live’).
