8.8 – Future Tense of Perfective Verbs

In this lesson we will learn about how to form the future tense for perfective verbs (see 8.6 – Future Tense of Imperfective Verbs for more information on the Imperfective Future).

Forming the perfective future is actually quite easy and will not involve learning any new forms. In order to express future actions with these verbs, just conjugate them normally, i.e.

koupit pf. – to buy

(já)	koupím ‘I will buy’	(my)	koupíme ‘I will buy’
(ty)	koupíš ‘you will buy’	(vy)	koupíte ‘you will buy / ya’ll will buy’
(on/ona/ono)	koupí ‘he/she will buy’	(oni/ony/ona)	koupí ‘they will buy’

udělat pf. – to do

(já)	udělám ‘I will do’	(my)	uděláme ‘we will do’
(ty)	uděláš ‘you will do’	(vy)	uděláte ‘you will do / ya’ll will do’
(on/ona/ono)	udělá ‘he/she will do’	(oni/ony/ona)	udělají ‘they will do’

So, you might remember from the previous unit how perfective verbs are also used in the present tense to talk about completed actions when we’re talking about habitual events:

Obvykle udělám všechny domácí úkoly na celý týden v neděli.

I usually do all my homework for the week on Sunday.

Vždycky umyju nádobí po večeři.

I always wash the dishes (all of them) after dinner.

So how do you know when it’s future tense? Typically context. Usually you wouldn’t find the future in these types of habitual constructions. Likewise, context will tell you when you would expect a future (either with a word like zítra or the general context of the conversation)
