8.1 – bavit – to amuse

bavit ‘to amuse’

The verb bavit is another way of saying you like something. It literally means something like ‘to amuse’ and is used similarly to the verb bolet – to hurt. In Czech, you say something amuses me to express that you like / enjoy it. Typically it’s used for activities or subjects in school.

So what case is used for the person that is being amused by the subject? That’s right, the accusative case. See the examples below:

Now, you might want to say that ‘he likes math’ or ‘do you like ’, or something like this. For that you’ll need accusative forms of pronouns ( since it literally is head hurts me):

These typically go in 2nd position, though the rules are a little more complex and can sometimes allow them to go in other places in the sentence. Check out some examples below:

As you can see with the last example, you can also use it with any activities you like doing as well and in this case you can just use the infinitive of the verb, so you can easily say mě baví lyžovat, sportovat, bruslit, koukat na televizi…
